AUTO ACCIDENT

Being involved in a motor vehicle accident is an all around horrible experience. You have been injured, your vehicle may be damaged beyond repair, and you have to spend hours of your time traveling back and forth to get treatment for injuries that you didn’t ask for. We are always sorry to hear these kinds of stories from our patients and believe that the best remedy is to treat you as we would our very own family. From experience in treating hundreds of different patients, we have come to the following conclusions:

  • People who get care within the first week of being injured tend to recover faster.
  • People who follow the doctors recommended care plan tend to heal better.
  • Patients who have legal representation tend to get more of their medical bills covered than those who do not.

QUESTIONS ABOUT AUTO ACCIDENTS

Why was there a delay in the onset of my symptoms?

There are numerous theories explaining the typical 24 to 72 hour delay that often occurs in the onset of injury-related symptoms, the official cause however, remains undetermined. Whiplash or sprain strain injuries involving the neck, mid back or low back involve spinal structures such as facet joints, ligamentous capsules,  intervertebral discs, and vertebral end plates. These structures are not supplied with a great deal of sensory nerves. In fact, up until the last decade, it was generally taught that the vertebral discs had no innervation at all. This may be one of the reasons why injuries in these tissues do not cause immediate pain. In contrast, our hands have one of the richest nerve supplies in the body so that we can feel. When you injure a hand, the brain becomes aware immediately.

Inflammation resulting from a trauma does not hit peak levels in the body for 12-72 hours. This may also explain the common delay in onset of symptoms after whiplash or similar injury.

What treatment is recommended for whiplash injuries?

Treatment recommended for whiplash type injury varies widely among health care practitioners. Often advice is to go home, apply an ice pack, take anti-inflammatory medication, and consult with the family doctor if symptoms persist beyond two weeks. Unfortunately, this advice is probably responsible for at least some of the more than 30 to 40% of whiplash victims who never fully recover and can become permanently disabled. Intervention during the initial two weeks post injury can greatly reduce the likelihood of long-term symptoms.

How effective is this type of treatment for whiplash and other injuries?

Studies show that chiropractic care was effective in 93% of Whiplash cases. A recent comparison of medicine, acupuncture, and chiropractic care demonstrated a rather profound superiority in chiropractic spinal manipulation over acupuncture and medications like Celebrex, Vioxx, and Percocet.
